“Maundy” is short for mandatum, which is Latin for “commandment.” We celebrate Jesus giving the disciples (and us) new commandment to us: that we love one another as he loved us. He demonstrated his love for us by washing his disciples’ feet and sharing a meal with them; he commanded us to love one another by serving each other and sharing meals together. An in-person and livestreamed service will commemorate these teachings and at the end of the service, we will strip the church of its decorations in memory of Jesus’ arrest, betrayal and death, the ultimate act of love.
